About

The Caribbean Council (NZ) is a private, member-supported organisation which was launched in April 2016. It covers all countries which are either geographically, politically, economically or culturally part of the Caribbean region.

Central American countries like Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama are included, as well as the shore of the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico and coast of Guatemala. Colombia and Venezuela, both located in South America, are very much part of the wider Caribbean region, too.

Several countries are considered part of the Caribbean for non-geographical reasons, such as the Bahamas archipelago (part of the Caribbean Community politically and economically, but not geographically), and Guyana, which is on the Atlantic coast of South America but is actually the seat of government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). French Guiana and Suriname, also on the Atlantic coast of South America, share cultural elements of the Caribbean and membership of regional organisations.

Our Objectives

The Council’s underlying objective is to promote discussion and encourage trade and economic relations between New Zealand and countries of the Caribbean region. We provide an environment where knowledge is shared and connections are made.

Activities

We organise regular events for members and the public at large. Our speaker events offer you the opportunity to meet diplomats, government officials, business leaders and academics, providing valuable insight into the business and cultural environment of the Caribbean. Sign up to our mailing list to receive the latest news, information and invitations to events.
